If there is an eyeshadow shade that is universally pretty on every skin tone and with every hair color, it's purple. Any variety of it - lavender, plum, violet - is the perfect accent for a feminine dress or night look. Pop stars Demi Lovato and Katy Perry are just a small sampling of the starlets that rock purple hues. Whether you are barely daring enough to supplement a shadow for your eyeliner, or bold enough to don a full lid, you really can't go wrong with this violet pigment. Check out some of our favorites below.

The Eurydice duo eyeshadow palette from NARS is by far one of our favorite purple shadows. It has just the right amount of intensity, and goes on very evenly. It's also great when used wet as a liner, and seems more resistant to caking than lower-end shadows. $32, Sephora.com

We loved the versatility of the Kat Von D True Romance eye palette, especially the range of plum to almost lavender hues that makes for the perfect purple smokey eye. But it's also good for everyday use with the earthy, neutral colors like the brown and gold. $24, Sephora.com

If there is an eyeshadow that has the perfect amount of shimmer, iridescence and pigment, its Dior's 5-colour in Extase Pinks. With a range in color that can take any chic lady from day to night, the shadows are velvety soft. Though it's definitely on the pricier side, it lasts and lasts...and lasts (we've had a Dior palette for over 5 years now and it's still going strong.) $58, Sephora.com

Since Illamasqua's release stateside a little over a year ago, we've been a smidge obsessed with their pure pigments and wide range of intense colors. Their powder eye shadow in Fatal is great when worn alone, as a shadow, or paired with shimmery whites and pinks for a dimensional eye. It starts pretty sheer, but can be quickly built up into a deep, vibrant purple. $20, Sephora.com

GinZing.EyeCream.jpgLet's face it: the recommended eight hours of sleep we should all get every night is sometimes hard to come by. This lack of Zzzzs usually shows up all over our faces, particularly in puffy eyes with dark circles.

That's where Origins steps in to provide relief with it's GinZing Refreshing eye cream

Claims: "GinZing™ Refreshing eye
cream brightens and de-puffs with nature's clinically-proven morning-rescue eye cream that instantly reduces dark circles. Like a shot of espresso for tired eyes, this power-packed eye cream delivers both an instant impact and sustained benefits over time. GinZing™ Refreshing eye cream is formulated with
a cool, crème texture that invigorates and hydrates the eye area, helping unsightly bags and under-eye puffiness virtually disappear. Vibrancy is restored, leaving the delicate eye-area appear rested, even-toned and revitalized."

Our take: We loved the smooth, fast-absorbing texture of this eye cream. It didn't sting or burn in the least (which is hard to find in an eye cream), and didn't leave any hint of greasy residue, making it great to wear under makeup. The skin around our eyes felt a light tingly sensation - the result of the caffeine - that helped a little with de-puffing (though we didn't see a significant difference). Also, we didn't notice much lightening of our dark circles, and resorted to our usual concealer.

Bottom line: We loved how smooth and tingly this product made our eyes feel, but didn't experience a major visible difference in our eye puffiness or dark circles. Although it did brighten up our eye temporarily, perhaps more longterm use would produce better results.

Bold eyes on starlets and Hollywood sweethearts is certainly nothing new, but how they wear these deep or bright shadows and liners is something anyone should take note of when replicating.

Bold Eyes 1.jpg
We got the scoop from trained makeup artist Claudia Lamos-Vargas and got her top tips on how to pull off a bold, vibrant eye without looking overdone or clownish, and how to make it last all night.

Bold Eyes 2.jpg

1. Keep it simple: "When your eyes are heavy on makeup, never go with a bright lip or too much blush or bronzer. A nude lipstick, or a pale neutral gloss works perfectly to play up your eyes to the fullest."

2. All about the basics: "Before applying any of your eye makeup, always prep the area with your foundation, and set it with powder. This base should be the perfect canvas!"

3. Start small: "It takes a certain amount of courage to pull off a vibrant, statement eye. If you want to play with a bold look or color, but aren't ready for the full effect, try using a pigment or cream shadow as an eyeliner for that pop of color, and keep the rest of your look simple and demure."

The sexy, sultry smoky eye is one of the hottest trends in beauty, but can also be one of the hardest to achieve. José Rivera, Principal Artist for Sephora's PRO Beauty Team, demonstrates in the video below how to get the look using Kat Von D High Voltage Eye Primer in Smoky, a creamy eye primer with a deeper tint made especially to work with darker shadows:

"An eye primer is essential in creating the smoky eye because of all the layering and blending you need to do with dark, rich pigment shadows," says José. "This primer not only helps shadows stay put, but the darker color blends seamlessly and enhances the smoky effect."

José created the smoky eye in the video using the new Kat Von D High Voltage Eye Primer in Smoky, the Adora Love & Fury Eyeshadow Palette and the Adora Painted Love Lipstick.

José's smoky eye tips:

  • Blend High Voltage Eye Primer in Smoky on the lid and under the eye
  • Dust the brush with shadow, invert it at an angle and press it into the lashline
  • Press and feather out color as you move the brush upwards and outwards using smooth strokes
  • Smudge the shadow under the eye along the lashline
  • Finish the eye look with a strong lash by curling and applying several coats of rich black mascara

I love playing with eyeshadow. Matte, shimmering, sparkling--I want and wear them all! They are fun and whimsical, and are an easy way to change up your look. But lately, no matter what eyeshadow I am wearing, I start to see it fade around midday. So, I finally gave in and purchased Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion in Sin. It's a lovely shimmering-champagne color - I had to get the shimmering version, of course! It's great under eyeshadow, and can also be worn alone if you're in a rush. The best part? It makes a great highlighter too. You can get yours at sephora.com. stylebakerybeauty:images:urban_decay_eyeshadow_primer_potion_sin.jpg

Not too much gold, just some highlights around the eyes, the lips and even the body (think...glittery Décolletage). Not into gold makeup? Then opt for gold nails  -- Chanel's Gold Lamé polish is the best.

Q. I have really bad dark circles and have tried every eye cream to get rid of them. I use a heavy Mac concealer to hide them but still not satisfied. Do you recommend anything that can get rid of them or brighten them? I want the under eye area to glow like all the models on the magazines. Do you have any recommendations?

th.bmpA. In a perfect world we'd all get enough sleep and always look fresh and rested. Of course that almost never happens, so we did some research for you.

First, the basics- make sure you stay well hydrated, get as much rest as you can (but not TOO much!), and reduce salt intake... after all, bags are really just fluid retention around the eye area that causes swelling, which in turn crates shadows and "darkness". In most cases the dark circles are blood vessels that can be seen through the skin, and nothing short of laser procedures to break up the pigmentation are going to get rid of them.

You can MASK them with concealer, and also with products made to reduce puffiness caused by lack of sleep, illness, or allergies-- all of which cause the eye area to swell which in turn draw attention to the dark areas. For these, you don't need anti-aging eye creams loaded with wrinkle reducers... a simple, lightweight cream or gel with caffeine (caffeine constricts blood vessels, making them appear less prominent) should do the trick. We really like rollerballs, like the Garnier Nutritioniste Anti Puff Eye Roller. The bonus of the roller ball  is that it gently massages the area, breaking up the pocket of collected fluid and alleviating the darkness.

To conceal, we swear by Lancomes Effacernes. Highly pigmented, thin and buildable so it never cakes, and best of all- WATERPROOF. A bit pricey for some at almost $30 a tube, but you use so little to get great coverage that a tube seriously lasts a year or more. If you need something heavier, check out this post we did last week on SmartCover. It seriously covers EVERYTHING.

(On a side note, anemia can also cause darkness under the eye, so if you're feeling tired all of the time-- it may not be lack of sleep. It might be worth it to have a check up and ask the doctor to check your iron levels.)

Hope that helped!

astrogirl.jpgWhat's your sign? No, seriously, what's your sign? It might help when picking out one of Napoleon Perdis' new Astro Girl Eye Shadow Quads. The Australian make up artist references astrology in his new collection of eye shadow quads based off the zodiac signs Fire, Earth, Air, Water. We're total astrology buffs so we couldn't resist giving this new product a chance -- fire to be exact. Even though we don't consider ourselves characteristic Leos, this 'take charge' (their words not ours) palette worked wonders. The iridescent copper, gold, pink and deep purple compliment each other very well. The firey tones blend together smoothly and boast just the right amount of shimmer.
