It feels like we’ve been waiting our whole lives for The Great Gatsby to come to life on film. Or at least a good part of the year. What’s not to love about the upcoming big screen adaptation: the actors, the music, and most importantly — the fashion. The 1920s represent a time when women were empowered to take control of their clothing, hair, and makeup, leading to styles that became timeless, like the bob, bright red lips, and detailed hair accessories.

With the film premiering on May 10, you can finally indulge in your 20s era obsessions with a geometric, feathered or beaded headband. Turban headbands are an easier way to try the turban trend without spending hours on YouTube trying to figure out how to tie one. The hair accessories are an easy way to pull a little Gatsby into your wardrobe without going full on flapper or breaking the bank, since they are all under $20.
Landing in a Sephora near you on April 30th, British beauty brand Illamasqua explores the supernatural side of beauty in their summer Paranormal collection. The collection includes a vibrant water resistant Paranormal eyeshadow palette ($46.50) featuring four colors ranging from Vivid Cerise (reddish pink) to Cool Green, Warm Copper and Soft Violet. The Paranormal collection also includes a lightweight highlighter ($26) that “creates a glow of extraordinary light wherever applied” and the Precision Ink water-proof liquid liner ($27.50) that goes on with a sheen and stays put all day, and then a little longer. Rumor has it that the liquid liner can also double as a nail art pen.

The real stand out in Illamasqua’s Paranormal beauty world is their limited edition collection of UV nail varnishes ($17). To the world your nails will be bright and colorful with a slight metallic finish, but to those in the know (with the assistance of a black light) all of your nail art secrets can be revealed. That’s right… these colors glow under black light. Even just saying the colors will freak people out, with names like Omen (bright green), Séance (bright violet), and Ouija (bright pink). One of the most impressive products is the UV top coat Geist, which turns every nail polish you own into a color that will glow under black lights. Next up on the agenda: plan your weekend around places that use black lights.
Actresses are making bold hair changes right and left these days. First we had Sofia Vergara debuting a freshly highlighted and lightened up mane. That was followed by Reese Witherspoon showing off her new brunette hue. But Tinsel Town’s ladies were making more hair-raising headlines this week. Jennifer Lawrence showed up at the GLAAD Media Awards with a newly cropped ‘do that hit right at her shoulders while Minka Kelly revealed a softer, lighter version of her signature long locks. I think both looks are totally of the moment and show off each girl’s fashionably fearless side. What do you think? Whose makeover do you think works better?

Emotionally charged movies aside, the best part of indie film festivals like the Tribeca Film Festival are the understated celebrity beauty looks that populate the “red carpet”, which is usually just a small few yards outside of the venue where the screening takes place. The celebrity equivalent to dress down days in high school, if you will. At the premiere of “The Reluctant Fundamentalist”, Kate Hudson’s makeup stayed basic with a nude lip, but kicked up a notch with a smoky eye to remind us that she will always bring a little Hollywood glamour to the table (or the carpet in this case).

As the face and Global Ambassador for Almay, Hudson’s team at Almay shared their inspiration for a budget version of Kate’s look with us featuring Almay’s makeup made especially for sensitive skin.

I’m so over gooey gloss that sticks to everything, like my hair (UGH) and paper napkins (double UGH). I’ve also never been a big fan of matte lipsticks that make my lips look dry and cakey. Soap & Glory Sexy Mother Pucker Gloss Sticks give you shine, texture and color in the best type of formula (crayon-style). Application is easy and effortless and the results are amazing. Mother Pucker Gloss Sticks are packed with ingredients aimed at enhancing your pout, creating fuller, more noticeable lips. They only come in three different shades — do you want barely there Nudist, bright and bold Fuschia-ristic, or deep and dramatic Plum Jam? Nudist, my shade of choice, is a great spring shade.
