SPF-Beauty-Image.jpgThere are so many products out there formulated with SPF. But how do you find the ones that are absolutely perfect for you? Well, luckily, we’ve culled through the hundreds of SPF products and found the ones that really and truly work. Here are our favorites.

Best drugstore sunscreen
Hands down, our choice for drugstore sunscreen is Neutrogena Age Shield Face Sunblock Lotion SPF 70. (Yes, you read that number right!) If you want your face to look as young 40 years from now as it does today, this is the sunscreen for you.

Best sunscreen-infused lip balm
Okay, confession time. It was completely impossible to pick just one in this category, so we picked two! It’s a tossup between Fresh Sugar Plum Tinted Lip Treatment SPF 15 ($22.50 at sephora.com) and Benefit Benetint Lip Balm SPF 15 ($20 at benefitcosmetics.com). Each imparts a pretty, just-kissed amount of color upon the lips—totally gorgeous.

Best allover sunscreen stick
From your elbows to your ears, the tops of your feet to the tip of your nose, there’s one product out there that’s great for every place imaginable. And that’s Clinique Sun SPF 45 Targeted Protection Stick. We tested this stick in Hawaii, and even in the hottest sun imaginable, we remained unburned!

Best dermatologist-created sun product
Everything Dr. Dennis Gross touches turns to gold … and his All-in-One Tinted Moisturizer Sunscreen SPF 15 is no exception. Antioxidants, a hint of tint and, of course, sunscreen, combine to create one pretty powerful product.

Best self tanner
Okay, this product is pure genius. Clarins Delectable Self Tanning Mousse SPF 15 not only makes your legs glow with what looks like a real tan, but it actually contains SPF so your skin is totally pretty and protected.

Fresh-Sugar-Rose.jpg
We’ve been trying to test Fresh’s Sugar lip treatments for a while, but they were at such high demand in the beauty-testing world, that we were never able to receive samples. So, what did we do? We just went out, and bought the dang thing. It was well worth the $22.50 we shelled out for the Sugar Rosé shade

Before we start talking about the slick, smooth, perfect pouty pink, we want to talk about the construction of the case it comes in, because this, friends, is what makes this product stand out above other comparable lip goods.

How many times have you stored a lip balm/gloss (whether cheapo or pricey) in your purse, only to reach in at some point and realize that the top had come off, and your precious, beloved product was smeared all over everything in your bag? This has happened one too many times for our liking - especially in our beloved designer handbag with the cream silk lining with a bright red lipstick (it was not pretty.) Well, Fresh’s lip treatments have a top that screws shut. You have to twist the top off to use it, and no matter how many times we tested rubbing it against something to see if it would unscrew, it stayed shut, just like it should.

Now, on to the rest of Fresh’s Sugar Rosé’s winning qualities. One swipe, and our lips were super soft. Honestly, one swipe, though we prefered about 3 swipes on top and bottom to achieve the subtle shade of pink we were going for. It’s very sheer, so building color is easy without going overboard. The SPF 15 is wonderful for sunny days, and the lack of parabens, petroleum, sulfates other stuff we don’t want anywhere near our mouths, makes us feel comfortable about ingesting the product naturally.

Though the smell threw us off (it’s almost a lemongrass scent…we were expecting something fruity), it didn’t bother us too much once we got used to it. It’s just glossy enough to put a pretty sheen on our lips, and overall, there really isn’t a single thing (besides the non-fruit scent) that we would change. We finally understand what all the noise was about. Even at $22.50, we’d buy it again in a heartbeat. Sephora.com
Philosophy is known the world over for their skincare with whimsical names, such as their Hope in a Jar moisturizer, When Hope is Not Enough serum, and The Great Mystery Daily Facial. You may have salivated over their so-good-you-could-eat-it food inspired 3-in-1 bath gels (Red Velvet Cake, anyone?), or doused yourself in the heavenly Amazing Grace fragrance. But did you know that Philosophy has amazing makeup too?

Philosophy’s the supernatural line is just that: super healthy, mineral-based, your-skin-but-better makeup. Standouts include:

  • Airbrushed Canvas- a high-pigment, talc-free foundation that conceals, camouflages and provides spf protection all in one easy step. best of all, it’s safe for all skin types. Airbrushed Canvas looks natural and almost melts into skin, leaving you flawless with no tell tale makeup look or “shiny” appearance that other mineral powders can take on.
  • Superbeautiful Hybrid Liquid- a healthy, good-for-skin makeup infused with natural, plant-based moisturizers, minerals, vitamins, antioxidants, and spf 20 to deliver sheer color, moisture and protection. Perfect for those who like the look and application of liquid makeup with the benefits of minerals. This one truly does double duty to keep skin flawless with or without makeup.
  • Lit From Within Cream Blush - a superblendable, creamy, natural mineral blush that moisturizes, refreshes and adds sheer, healthy color to cheeks. This cream is easily applied with fingers or brush (we prefer our fingers!), and makes skin glow.
  • You Make Me Blush Cheek Duo- a mineral powder duo creates a believable, natural flush of color for an all-over healthy look. The two shades complement each other, while also creating endless options for defining, highlighting, and accentuating features, all while remaining completely natural.
If you’re like us, you want super-performing products that leave you looking your best…without looking like someone else…which is exactly what you’ll get from Philosophy. Definitely worth a try!

The line retails between $22-$35, available nationwide at Sephora, or at Philosophy.com.

Double-Duty-Lips.jpg
Sometimes, it’s hard enough to remember to apply sunscreen to our bodies as part of our beauty regimens, and when you actually do get around to spritzing on the protection (which you should do, every day….we know we don’t have to tell you twice), your lips are probably pretty low down on the check list.

But guess what, our lips are skin, too - and sensitive skin to boot - that need protection from the sun as much as our faces, limbs and chests. So we rounded up three types of lip products, a gloss, a balm and a traditional conditioner, that can be implemented into your daily routines without even a second thought.

The lip gloss of the bunch, Peter Thomas Roth’s Un-Wrinkle Lip Balm SPF 15 in Pink Shimmer, has a nice high shine with no real scent or flavor. We like it because it has a pretty light pink color, and though it’s the only shade it comes in, we think it’s sheer enough to suit most skin colors. The non-sticky gloss boasts six anti-aging ingredients, as well as aloe and vitamins A, C and E to boost volume and reduce fine lines and wrinkles. $15, Amazon.com

Too Faced Love Lisa Luxury Lip Balm Sunscreen doesn’t just do double duty, it’s a triple threat. Not only does this sassy tube come packed with fresh smelling orange essential oils and a sun protection factor of 15, but a big portion of the sale of each balm goes to the Too Faced Love Lisa Melanoma Research Foundation Grant. It’s colorless, and has a satiny finish, which we love for pairing with lip stains, or to wear alone. $16, Sephora.com

The highest protection in the lip products we tested was Kinerase’s Ultimate Volume Lip Conditioner with SPF 20. It is a little thin and runny for our liking, but it was very hydrating. For women concerned with fine lines or wrinkles around the mouth, Kinerase uses an ingredient called Volulip which is supposed to increase the production of collagen. $28, Nordstrom.com

Paulas-Choice-SPF_thumbnails.jpgSummer may be quickly winding down, but that doesn’t mean you need to put away your sunscreen along with your bikinis and flip flops. Relatively new to the beauty scene, the Ultra-light Weightless Finish SPF 30 Sunscreen Spray by Paula’s Choice is definitely a must-have product to keep in the front row of your beauty drawer year-round. Just as the name suggests, it’s super light, and not the least bit heavy. We loved how easy the clear liquid spritzed on, though we did have to rub it in a little to evenly distribute the sunscreen. Though it left our hands a little greasy from the application initially, it was absorbed almost instantaneously, and didn’t leave behind any residue, film, oil, or any other sign that makes most of us dread our daily SPF application.

The product details mention it’s suitable for face and body, though we only tried it on our limbs, chest and neck. However, with how quickly the spray is absorbed, and the lack of any greasy residue on our arms, we could see it working for the face. It’s 100% fragrance-free and has no dyes or colorings, so it’s perfect for the most sensitive of skin types (like ours.) The SPF 30 is dermatologist recommended for daily use, and should be applied every few hours (especially after excessive perspiration) for optimum protection. Thankfully, the bottle is slim and can be easily carried around in your daily satchel or tote for multiple applications. If you are anything like us, Paula’s Choice Weightless spray will immediately become your go-to, can’t-live-without sunscreen, so stock up!
