The longest name for a product in the world aside, we’re completely head over heels for Living Proof Straight Making No Frizz Styling Cream for Medium to Thick Hair. This innocent-looking bottle contains one of the best styling creams we’ve yet to come across in all our years of playing with hair products … and that’s really saying something!

Our hair falls on the thick, coarse side of things, so we always need to use a cream like this to tame the frizz and make it more manageable while blowdrying. Living Proof’s styling cream targets both humidity and friction—so no matter what the weather or the time of year, hair is left looking silky, shiny and completely frizz-free. This is thanks to PolyfluoroEster, which settles on the hair in a single perfect layer to smooth each and every strand.

We also love that the formula isn’t heavy. It has almost a gel-like consistency within the cream, so it doesn’t weigh down the hair or leave it looking and feeling greasy. It’s even meant to repel dirt and oil, so you can go longer between shampoos! (And, yes, we’ve tried this and gone close to 5 days without washing … and it actually worked!)

At an event for Alterna this past week, we were introduced to their brand new Bamboo Smooth line. We must say we were quite excited to try the shampoo and conditioner, not only because our hair is unbelievably unruly left to its own devices, but because — to be honest — we were well past “wash our hair day.” So we lathered up with the BambooSmooth Anti-Frizz Shampoo and Conditioner, and here are our thoughts.

First off? The shampoo and conditioner smell amazing. They’re rich, fresh and not at all coying — and they make us feel as though we’re in the midst of a rainforest. They’re each formulated with pure Organic Bamboo, which works to boost hair’s inherent strength and renew its ability to protect itself from environmental damage. They also contain Kendi Oil, which has Omega-3s and tocopherol to seal the cuticle and make it straight, smooth and frizz-free.

What they’re formulated without? Parabens, sulfates, gluten, sodium chloride, Phthalates, petrolatum, mineral oil, synthetic color and PABA — so they’re perfect for color-treated hair because they won’t strip the color.

But now down to the nitty gritty … what did we think of the products once we tried them? While the shampoo did leave our hair feeling softer and more manageable — it’s definitely one we would include in our weekly hair washing routine — the conditioner actually did not perform as well. We were pleased to discover we didn’t need as much of it as we might with some others (our hair is so thick and coarse, we’ve been known to use well over a palm-sized amount of conditioner at a time), but it just left our locks feeling a bit straw-like. We definitely needed to use a leave-in conditioner and styling treatment on top of the shampoo and conditioner to tame frizz.

After blowdrying, our hair was noticeably less frizzy than with other shampoos and conditioners we’ve tried. We still needed to flat iron it — it was far from straight — BUT we didn’t even have any little frizzies after working out later that day!

Our final verdict: at $20 each, it’s a bit pricey. But we definitely think the frizz factor is noticeably reduced.
