Now that summer is unofficially over and the fall weather is upon us, we can say goodbye to the days of natural highlights and sun-kissed streaks. Although I like to keep my hair in the red family year round, I have to admit I enjoy getting the natural highlights the sun gives me throughout the summer. So naturally when the summertime is gone, it becomes more difficult to get these highlights without paying an arm and a leg or using a box kit. Now don’t get me wrong, I use box hair dye when I’m coloring my whole head, but I have seen too many tragedies when trying to achieve highlights for me to even consider trying it at home. Luckily, after some research I found two products I would recommend that don’t come with hair dye.

My first recommendation is the Oribe 24k Gold Pomade ($49). Although the price seems a little steep for a 50 ml container, it is well worth trying out. The pomade is made with pro-vitamin B5, which nourishes and moisturizes while strengthening and improving the condition of your hair, even in extreme humidity. Also, it includes Ultrasil Copolyol-1 that works to condition and add shine to you hair throughout the day. Your hair will be infused with rich-gold highlights the minute you apply it and it will also keep your hair out of you face for the entire day. Best of all, it’s Paraben-free, a UV protectant, and color safe.

The next recommendation is the John Frieda Sheer Blonde Highlight Activating Shampoo ($6.49). The first thing that caught my eye about this, besides the price being unbeatable, is the fact that there are different formulas for different hair colors. To me, this is one of the most important things when looking for such a product — how can a company guarantee there will be the same result for different shades? The product’s formula includes honey and oatmeal, which work together gently to remove darkening and dulling buildup. The result, a full spectrum of blonde tones. SImply replace your current shampoo with the highlighting activator and watch your blonde shine through.

Normally when you hear the word anti-aging formula, the first thing you’re going to think of is a face or eye cream, not shampoo. I’d assume this because as someone who works in the beauty industry, that was the last thing that came to my mind, but to my surprise, shampoo is now going to be a product associated with anti-aging formulas thanks to companies like Caviar and the Anti-Aging Volume Shampoo. They aren’t the only company with such a product, but it’s the only one I’ve found that I would try because it combines two of my favorite things: rejuvenated hair and volume.

The shampoo features a very similar formula to that of an anti-aging cream. It attracts, retains and rebalances moisture while protecting the color and improving the overall dry and brittle hair. It’s formulated with Seasilk, Color Hold, and UVA/UVB protectants to shield from color fade, daily environmental stresses and future damages. The anti-aging aspect is composed of Caviar extract, Vitamin C and Cytokines for stronger, healthier and younger-looking locks. Although the anti-aging shampoo is more expensive than a normal shampoo you’d pick up at a drugstore, you’ll love the results.

Conair Infiniti Pro 1 Inch Ceramic Flat Iron

I may not have super curly hair or out of control waves, but my hairstyle does require straight ends and absolutely no frizz. I fell in love with what became known as the “Posh Cut” when the Spice Girl herself made it famous a few years ago and I’ve since tweaked it a few times, but ultimately have kept it since then. In order to make this look work, you need pin straight ends and you need it to look sleek. I naively believed the most important ingredients in getting my desired look were the products I put in my hair before styling, but that’s only part of the equation.

After going through countless flat irons and getting advice from my amazing hair stylist, I chose the perfect one that gives me the best shine and straightest look. The Conair Infiniti Pro 1 Inch Ceramic Flat Iron is an oil-infused flat iron that combines argan oils with anti frizzing conditioner into the ceramic plates. This combination results in 85% less frizz after use and the oil fusions help protect against heat damage that comes with daily use. Also, the plates themselves are 29% longer than average 1-inch flat iron plates, which allows for quicker styling and gives the option to straighten or flip.

I’ve never really struggled with curls or unruly hair, but I understand the annoying aspect of a morning routine that involves taking the time to make sure your hairstyle is on point, because having an asymmetrical bob involves a specific look. I can only imagine the pain of trying to achieve straight hair when yours is frizzy, curly and uncooperative. Luckily, my new hair product obsession is just the answer: one product to use while your hair is wet and one when it is dry — and trust me, they work!

For wet hair

The Bumble and Bumble Concen-straight Smoothing Treatment is a gentle yet potent single-use straightening treatment that will help keep your straight look for up to 30 shampoos. The patent pending technology helps maintain hair’s natural look while creating smoothness, manageability, styling ease, and erases frizz and flyaways. The heat from the blow dryer will unlock the treatment’s artistic potential and help create body and movement. The best part about this product is it doesn’t require you to use a blow dryer; if you want to let your hair dry naturally after applying it, go right ahead, your finished look will include a more manageable texture of your hair. Another plus, it works with all hair types and won’t affect any color in your hair!

For dry hair

The Bumble and Bumble Grooming Crème is composed of natural oils, jojoba seed oil, sweet almond oil, and avocado oil that will help maintain your sleek and shiny look after you’re done styling, while simultaneously hydrating your hair to help prevent damage from the dryer and flat iron. The crème will not only help keep your straight hair straight, but it also gives texture, volume and control. The best part about this product is it can be used by both men and women.

Hayden Panettiere posted a teaser pic to her Twitter of her new bright blond, blunt bangs — say that five times fast. I think the look is actually really edgy and stylish for a young starlet who has often take the safe route with her hair, keeping it generally the same length and color. Her thick, fringy bangs are a fun way to change up her look. The question is, will she keep them? Or will she pull a Beyoncé and find a way to revert back to her old style STAT.

And, speaking of *ahem* extensions, if you’ve wanted bangs and been afraid of the commitment, HairUWear makes a great clip-in bang extension as part of their Hairdo line (available for $29 at People StyleWatch has a full shot of Hayden sporting her new ‘do, if you want the full effect.
