Actresses are making bold hair changes right and left these days. First we had Sofia Vergara debuting a freshly highlighted and lightened up mane. That was followed by Reese Witherspoon showing off her new brunette hue. But Tinsel Town’s ladies were making more hair-raising headlines this week. Jennifer Lawrence showed up at the GLAAD Media Awards with a newly cropped ‘do that hit right at her shoulders while Minka Kelly revealed a softer, lighter version of her signature long locks. I think both looks are totally of the moment and show off each girl’s fashionably fearless side. What do you think? Whose makeover do you think works better?

Emotionally charged movies aside, the best part of indie film festivals like the Tribeca Film Festival are the understated celebrity beauty looks that populate the “red carpet”, which is usually just a small few yards outside of the venue where the screening takes place. The celebrity equivalent to dress down days in high school, if you will. At the premiere of “The Reluctant Fundamentalist”, Kate Hudson’s makeup stayed basic with a nude lip, but kicked up a notch with a smoky eye to remind us that she will always bring a little Hollywood glamour to the table (or the carpet in this case).

As the face and Global Ambassador for Almay, Hudson’s team at Almay shared their inspiration for a budget version of Kate’s look with us featuring Almay’s makeup made especially for sensitive skin.

We got the inside scoop on how to copy Selena Gomez’s MTV Movie Awards hairstyle. Marissa Marino of the Nine Zero One Salon worked on the punky pompadour and used UNITE Hair Care products to get it just right. Here, from UNITE Hair Care, are the steps to recreate the look:
  1. To create the pompadour, section off hair from the front of your hairline and sprinkle it with the UNITE Expanda Dust ($25) throughout. Tease it back, using a comb. Next, pin this section with a bobby pin to secure it in place.
  2. Take the rest of the hair and make five small ponytails down the center of your head.
  3. Create a French braid using all of the ponytails together. (You can find French braid tutorials on YouTube.com).
  4. Spray the UNITE Session Max Hairspray ($29.95) all over to tame frizzies and smooth the sides around the hairline.
  5. To make the braid look undone, pull it apart and pin these pieces down, using bobby pins.
  6. Finish the look with the UNITE Max Control Hairspray ($27.50) to tame down any fly-aways.

The braid is back and better than ever. From milkmaids to fishtails, Kim Kardashian and Emmy Rossum prove your hair can be a little bit messy and still look perfectly polished.

Buttoned up in a red, lace, knee length dress, Kim Kardashian managed to make a hairstyle named after a maid look elegant at the launch of her fourth fragrance Glam. While milkmaid braids are more popular at outdoor music festivals than beauty launches, Kim’s tailored outfit and polished makeup keep Kim the playful braid professional.

Emmy Rossum out-laced Kim with her white ruffled collar at the Saving Tails Fundraiser for animals. The messy fishtail braid keeps her prim and proper outfit from feeling too stuffy. With her fresh, red lip and button up shirt, Emmy’s braid manages to tow the fine line between a cool, messy braid and a sloppy braid.

Elle magazine’s 4th annual Women in Music Awards party celebrated a few of the hardest working women in the music industry. Rita Ora and Kelly Rowland are definitely two singers who seem to be popping up everywhere lately, not that we are complaining about that at all — especially since these ladies brought their boldest and brightest nail game to spice things up at the Elle event.

Rita Ora’s fiery red lip may be where your eyes are immediately drawn, but her sky blue nails add a very necessary bit of fun to her otherwise serious Saint Laurent ensemble. For a similar sky blue shade, try China Glaze in Sky High Top for $7.

Kelly Rowland’s nails were clearly her best accessory, and she made sure to look adorable while flaunting them on the red (well, purple) carpet. For a similar coral color, try CoverGirl Outlast Stay Brilliant polish in Coral Silk for $4.
