Achieving a healthy glow is a lot harder than Rosario Dawson makes it look. Sure, you should drink lots of water, eat healthy, make sure you maintain a regular skin care routine, and get plenty of sleep. But let’s be real for a second here — as much as this is the golden standard we all strive for, who has time for all that? While working towards a healthier lifestyle that will reflect through perfect skin, I’ve been cheating. I’ve tried, tested and found these five beauty products offer the best glow with minimal excess shimmer particles. For good measure, don’t forget to drink a glass of water while you get your glow on.

Standing in an impossibly long line at Sephora, you aimlessly pick up the strategically placed items that line the shelves. A red label with the words “cleansing spa water” catches your eye. It sounds fancy. You don’t believe it will really work though. Before you can question why anyone would pay $13 for a travel size container of water, you’ve added it to your purchase at check out. That night, after arguing with yourself on the couch over the fact that no matter how tired you are you still need to remove your makeup, you begrudgingly head to the bathroom and squeeze this ‘cleansing water’ onto a cotton pad. It immediately removes your mascara, your eyeliner, and your doubts. Your skin doesn’t feel oily or dry. You’re immediately hooked. You’re welcome.

This article was inspired by Koh Gen Do’s cleansing spa water, but two affordable alternatives are also pictured.

If your hair is more baby fine than big and bouncy you’ll want to pay close attention to this beauty lesson. In general, fine, thin hair doesn’t require daily washing, but without a proper wash and blow-dry, your hair may be positively flat by day two. Enter hair thickening powders — I don’t know how long they’ve been on the market, but I recently discovered them and found the secret to reviving my limp locks in between washings. There are two powders in particular that I am a big fan of: One of them is Unite Expanda Dust (available for $26 at shop.unitehair.com); after I found out it’s role in Julianne Hough’s amazing Golden Globes’ hairstyle I had to check it out myself. Packed with ingredients and starches that are intended to thicken hair this powder delivers, and quickly. The other powder that’s become a must-have is Aveda’s Pure Abundance Hair Potion (available for $24 at nordstrom.com). Sprinkled directly in hair or emulsified in your hands with a little bit of water, the effect is the same, thicker, more voluminous hair.

Some things to remember when working with hair powders, a little bit truly goes a long way — the powders might seem light, but they deliver big! In general you need to just sprinkle a little bit at your roots and tousle hair with your hands to evenly disperse the powder throughout.  I generally follow up with a round barrel brush and a hair dryer to add some more depth to my roots and some curly bounce to the ends.

When it comes to new beauty trends, BB cream has been leading the pack in popularity. Brands from Maybelline to Dior offered the beauty balm or blemish balm to the masses who gladly slathered on BB goodness to tint, hydrate and SPF their faces. Seemingly taking a trend and running with it, beauty brands are now selling us on the multiple benefits of CC (or color corrector) cream. So is this for real? Is there a difference between BB cream and CC cream?

It may surprise you to hear that there actually is a difference between the two similar sounding products. CC cream fits more in the skincare family than the cosmetic family, unlike BB cream. With the main focus of the product on priming, nourishing and providing color correction to your skin, CC cream is the older, wiser and less flashy (color coverage wise) version of BB cream.

UK based skincare brand Nip + Fab creator, Maria Hatzistefanis, tells us that she created her CC cream “as an answer to many peoples’ complaints about BB creams,” stating that “they are often too oily, too heavy.” Creating a lighter formula that corrects skin rather than just covering it up, brands like Clinique will be introducing their own CC cream this spring that will focus on brighter skin with the use of light diffusing optic technology. If you have redness, uneven skin tone, or acne prone skin, CC cream will be a welcome addition to your routine.
