March 2010 Archives

As beauty girls, it’s easy to get caught up in the new, and accidentally lose sight of old faves.

The upside to this is stumbling across these forgotten loves while rifling through our overpacked makeup cases and beauty drawers— it’s like discovering them for the first time all over again.

Smashbox’s Anti-Shine debuted in 2000, and is a long lasting, gel to powder mattifier meant to reduce shine and keep oil at bay all day, even under the hot studio lights it was created to withstand.
05861596802.jpgWhile the product is meant to be used both under foundation and as a touch up throughout the day, we find the best trick is to apply makeup normally, squeeze a small amount onto fingertips, and gently pat onto problem areas OVER makeup. Those of us without oily skin still love this product for the matte, flawless finish. A total winner in our book.

Now that we’ve rediscovered it, we promise to never let it go again…if we can help it.

$27, Sephora.
astrogirl.jpgWhat’s your sign? No, seriously, what’s your sign? It might help when picking out one of Napoleon Perdis’ new Astro Girl Eye Shadow Quads. The Australian make up artist references astrology in his new collection of eye shadow quads based off the zodiac signs Fire, Earth, Air, Water. We’re total astrology buffs so we couldn’t resist giving this new product a chance — fire to be exact. Even though we don’t consider ourselves characteristic Leos, this ‘take charge’ (their words not ours) palette worked wonders. The iridescent copper, gold, pink and deep purple compliment each other very well. The firey tones blend together smoothly and boast just the right amount of shimmer.

It doesn’t matter whether you were up late dancing or working: Whatever the cause, a sleepness night can wreak havoc on your skin. But don’t assume the only solution is to crawl back into bed…follow these tips to looking radiant and refreshed in no time.

1. Scrub exhaustion away: While you sleep, skin goes through a “renew and repair” cycle that includes the natural exfoliation of dead skin cells. Lack of sleep means means lack of time to repair… and can leave skin looking dull. A good scrub in the shower can replicate this process quickly, leaving skin more radiant and healthy.  *Bonus- Rinse with cold water to stimulate circulation and  firm skin quickly.

2. Moisturize: Losing sleep can mean more than yawns and puffy eyes: it also causes dehydrated skin. A good dose of moisturizer will restore balance and give skin a younger, more supple appearance. *Bonus- Choose a moisturizer with a hint of gradual tanner to counteract sallowness and give skin a natural glow.

3. Less is more foundation: When skin looks dull, our first instinct is to PILE on makeup to conceal the problem. The answer is actually less rather than more. A sheer, creamy formula with light reflecting particles will even out skin tone and diffuse imperfections. Apply with fingers rather than a brush or sponge, so that it melts into skin. *Bonus- Only powder the chin and forehead, leaving the bridge of nose and cheeks dewy.

Stila Sheer Color Tinted Moisturizer, NARS Sheer Glow Foundation

4. Pay special attention to eyelids: The single most tell-tale sign of a late night? Puffy, red eyes. Pay special attention to this area. Use a creamy concealer to mask dark circles, and don’t forget to blend onto top lid to conceal redness or darkness. *Bonus- a few drops of redness relief drops to whiten eye, and line inner rim with a peachy-flesh toned pencil for a wide-eyed look.

Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage, Lancome Effacernes Waterproof Concealer

5. Curl lashes for a wide-awake look: This is tried and true advice, yet is usually the most overlooked step. Believe in the power of a lash curler! For added life, use a heated curler, or heat the curler with a blast from the blowdryer to set curl, taking care to test first on back of hand to avoid burns. *Bonus: coat lashes with a navy mascara instead of black; the blue will make eyes appear whiter by comparison.

6. Lastly, a pop of cheek color to brighten the face and draw focus: Tired skin has a sallow, drained appearance; add back some life with a pop of healthy color right on apples of cheeks. *Bonus- Sheer formulas in hues of candy apple red or plum give skin a transparent, natural flush, like you just pinched your cheeks.

Since Sunday’s Academy Awards, the industry has been buzzing over Jennifer Lopez’s flawless red-carpet makeup.

Celebrity makeup artist Matthew Vanleeuween created her look using exclusively NARS products. Here’s how to get it:

Eyes: Eyes were prepped with Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base (available May 1st). Apply D. Gorgeous Single Eyeshadow, a matte, dusty lilac, all over lid to brow. Using Brousse Duo Eyeshadow, define crease with the dark purple shade. Line eyes with Nuits Blanches Eyeliner Stylo for definition. To finish, curl lashes and coat with two coats of Larger Than Life Volumizing Mascara.

Cheeks: Vanleeuween applied Desire Blush, a bright, cotton candy pink, to cheeks, and followed with Orgasm Illuminator to define cheek and brow bones with a golden glow. He topped that with Gueules de Nuit Cream Blush for extra punch (available May 1st; use Enchanted Cream Blush for a similar effect).

Lips: Lips were coated in Cruising Lipstick, a gorgeous nude pink, and topped with Lip Gloss in Sweet Dreams to add shimmer and enhance the pout.

To bring the look together, Orgasm Illuminator was also applied to the decolletage, arms and legs to give Jennifer her trademark glow.

While everyone was oohing and ahhing over Sandra’s super-shiny hair at the Oscars, we were busy obsessing over J Lo’s  perfect eyebrows! Yes, there are many salons that can shape similar brows, but remember the recession?! Not everyone can afford a trip to the brow Dr every month. The best advice is to lighten your brows a shade with dye, but it isn’t safe to recommend any at home kits, because the trick is to know how light to go. Worst case scenario you end up with no eyebrows, or disproportionate eyebrows…it can get scary. Second to dye, brow shaping kits are a must-have and the best way to perfect your arch.

And the nominees for best eyebrow shaping kits are:

1. Tweezerman Mini Brow Kit, Sephora $25 2. Cle de Peau Beaute Eyebrow and Eyeliner Compact, Neiman Marcus $70 3. Too Faced Brow Envy Shaping and Defining Kit, Sephora $35 4. Benefit Cosmetics Brow Zings, Benefit Cosmetics $30 5. Anastasia All About Brows Kit, Sephora $75 6. Sephora Collection Arch it Brow Kit, Sephora $35
