May 2010 Archives

Protection from the sun is vital, especially as temperatures start to soar. A few of the most feared words in a gal’s life? SUN DAMAGE. So fair and frightened is one of our editors, she triples up with SPF in her primer, moisturizer, AND foundation! (We should note that layering SPFs does not increase the number or effectiveness, but try telling her that…)

You may not be as paranoid as she is, but it’s important to protect yourself. No matter what your skin concern may be - aging, sensitive, acne-prone— we’ve got you covered…literally.

It’s pretty obvious by now that UV rays are harmful for the skin, especially those in the tanning booth. So you’re best staying out of the sun and faking it with sunless tanners. But the ones that don’t streak or leave you orange! The “Jersey Shore” cast should change their term to “GSTL” - Gym, Sunless Tanner, Laundry. Sorry….we just couldn’t resist!

Our picks for the top 10 sunless tanners of the year are:

The temps have been soaring lately, and you know what that means: pedicure time. Now, if you could only decide on a summery nail shade.

Here are some of our top picks:
summernail.bmp1. Chanel Le Vernis Orange Fizz- The mildest of the bunch, Orange Fizz is a sorbet shade for those who need to dip their toes in before going full-on bright.

2. China Glaze Towel Boy Toy- A gorgeous electric blue with a slight shimmer. It’s hard to describe Towel Boy and do it justice. It’s truly unlike any blue we’ve tried!

3. O.P.I. Need Sunglasses?- The name alone puts you in a beachy state of mind, and this sun yellow shade is bright and summery for those who want to do yellow without resembling a highlighter marker (If you do, check out Essie Funky Limelight).

4. Essie Perky Purple- One of our ABSOLUTE FAVES. Perky Purple looks scary in the bottle, but once applied is the most gorgeous magenta/purple hue. We think they should have named this shade “Magician” or something, because it looks different in every single picture we tried to take.

We firmly believe that certain products are best bought as sets (think eyeshadow duos, gloss palettes), but we never really ventured into blush/bronzer sets….until now! How cool is Hourglass Cosmetics’ new Illume Créme-to-Powder Bronzer Due?! Encased in their signature swivel compact, this new pair includes both a bronzer to add a little healthy color and a blush for a rosy glow.  We naturally gravitated towards the bronzer first, but couldn’t resist giving our cheeks a little extra flirt with the blush. It’s the best of both worlds.

As always, Hourglass is  free of parabens, phthalates and sulfates. $40, Available in May online at Sephora.

Brit retail favorite, Topshop, is expanding their brand to include beauty. Starting this month the retailer will introduce their first in-house range of color cosmetics, a 97 piece core collection of “essentials”, offset by additional trend collections that will launch every three months.

To celebrate the collection’s launch, Topshop is giving away this cute canvas shopper with every purchase in store and online.
TS_BAG(2).jpg
The collection will retail between $7-16 for the core range ($8-23 for the smaller Spring-Summer Limited Edition Trend range), and will be available at Topshop stores and online starting May 5th.

The totes are limited supply, so make sure you don’t miss out!
