November 2010 Archives

Kate-Sommerville-Discovery-Kit.jpgReady to start your gift giving brainstorming sessions but don’t know where to start? For the beauty junkie, a sample kit is always the best way to go, and one of our new favorites is Kate Somerville’s Discovery Kit.

Get your gift recipient (or yourself!) one step closer to radiant skin with this sampling of Kate’s best sellers. A clear plastic zipper bag (great for traveling, btw) comes stocked with the Gentle Daily Wash, Quench Hydrating Face Serum, Total Vitamin Antioxidant Serum, Nourish Daily Moisturizer, ExfoliKate Intensive Exfoliating Treatment, and two other sample creams.

We loved the foaming gel face wash because it removed all our makeup, but didn’t leave our skin feeling stripped. The 60 mL size is still going strong after daily use for three weeks, as you only need a small amount to get a good lather. The 15 mL jar of the ExfoliKate is marvelous for sloughing away dead skin cells (thank you, dry winter air). It’s an enzyme exfoliator with a slight roughness to it, that tingles just a bit, but leaves your skin ultra smooth. Our favorite gem of the bunch would definitely have to be the Nourish Daily Moisturizer. It’s ultra light-weight, super fast absorbing, and perfect during the pm for our oily skin.

Normally, this kit runs for $90, but from now until November 30, Kate Somerville is offering 30 percent off with coupon code KSFF2010Grab this goodie bag for yourself or a lucky friend/relative for just $60!

Crabtree-&-Evelyn-Citron-Honey-&-Coriander-Scrub-Cleanser.jpgNow that cooler temperatures are upon us, it’s imperative that we utilize body scrubs to the fullest. So when we came across Crabtree & Evelyn Citron, Honey & Coriander Scrub Cleanser, we were super excited — because our hands become ravaged at the very sight of 45-degree weather.

This deliciously scented hand wash is formulated with a blend of plant-based cleansers and natural exfoliants that really make hands gleam. We’ve found that our skin is softer and smoother from using this soap over time — and, really, only sudsing up with it once a day!

It’s also free of parabens, lauryl sulfates, mineral oil and propylene glycol, so you don’t have to worry about putting anything horrible onto or into your skin.

We’re just loving how refreshed and baby soft our hands look from using this cleanser. We can’t get enough of it!

It may not be the most original beauty trend for fall, but berry lips certainly ruled the runways this season. We’re totally loving the take on the trend at Dolce & Gabbana (left), where makeup artist Pat McGrath created a strong, almost matte texture that reminds us of crushed cranberries. Below, some of the lip products you can use to get the look.

Fall and winter makeup trends are a bit at extremes lately. Minimalism vs. va-va-voom. To get a simple look with some pizazz, a bright, yet smokey bronze eye is the perfect middle ground for those who can’t choose. Leading ladies such as Diane Kruger and Claire Danes rock the copper lids, and we’re here to show you what you need to be a golden goddess like them. Bonus: you only need two products!

1. Apply your chosen foundation or tinted moisturizer to even out your skin tone.

2. With Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick in Bronze ($38,, apply the top four colors to your blush brush, and lightly apply to the cheeks of your apples.

3. Sweep the light highlighter (top) shadow from your lash line to your brow bone to brighten up your eye.

4. Continue by applying the copper hue (third color) onto your entire lid, and slightly below your lower lash line.

5. Blend the darkest brown copper hue (fifth color) into your outer crease to deepen the look slightly.

6. Wet a liner brush, and apply the same brown copper hue to your inner lash line - top and bottom - smudging slightly to create a smokey effect.

7. Finish your eye with two to three quotes of L’Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes ($7.99,

Alterna-Bamboo-Smooth-Anti-Frizz-Shampoo.jpgAt an event for Alterna this past week, we were introduced to their brand new Bamboo Smooth line. We must say we were quite excited to try the shampoo and conditioner, not only because our hair is unbelievably unruly left to its own devices, but because — to be honest — we were well past “wash our hair day.” So we lathered up with the BambooSmooth Anti-Frizz Shampoo and Conditioner, and here are our thoughts.

First off? The shampoo and conditioner smell amazing. They’re rich, fresh and not at all coying — and they make us feel as though we’re in the midst of a rainforest. They’re each formulated with pure Organic Bamboo, which works to boost hair’s inherent strength and renew its ability to protect itself from environmental damage. They also contain Kendi Oil, which has Omega-3s and tocopherol to seal the cuticle and make it straight, smooth and frizz-free.

What they’re formulated without? Parabens, sulfates, gluten, sodium chloride, Phthalates, petrolatum, mineral oil, synthetic color and PABA — so they’re perfect for color-treated hair because they won’t strip the color.

But now down to the nitty gritty … what did we think of the products once we tried them? While the shampoo did leave our hair feeling softer and more manageable — it’s definitely one we would include in our weekly hair washing routine — the conditioner actually did not perform as well. We were pleased to discover we didn’t need as much of it as we might with some others (our hair is so thick and coarse, we’ve been known to use well over a palm-sized amount of conditioner at a time), but it just left our locks feeling a bit straw-like. We definitely needed to use a leave-in conditioner and styling treatment on top of the shampoo and conditioner to tame frizz.

After blowdrying, our hair was noticeably less frizzy than with other shampoos and conditioners we’ve tried. We still needed to flat iron it — it was far from straight — BUT we didn’t even have any little frizzies after working out later that day!

Our final verdict: at $20 each, it’s a bit pricey. But we definitely think the frizz factor is noticeably reduced.
