May 2013 Archives

The summer travel season kicks off this Memorial Day weekend and the only downside to a long weekend is being forced to play favorites with the products in your makeup bag. Fitting the perfect outfit in a small carry-on is tough enough, but the task of packing a truncated version of my daily skincare and makeup routine for a long weekend feels downright impossible sometimes. These compact, multi-tasking products are on my summer must-have list for weekend travels or carrying around in your purse for quick touch-ups.

1. RMS Beauty Luminzer: This organic, sheer luminizer can of course be used as a highlighter on your cheeks and orbital bones, but you can also swipe a little of this under your eyes to help diffuse dark circles. RMS Luminzer is a quick way to make your skin look refreshed when you’re traveling, and the organic ingredients are actually improving your skin over time.

2. Becca Beach Tint: There are eight shades to choose from, but pick one that you want to use for both your cheek and lip color. The tube may be small, but the color is super pigmented so a little goes a long way. For added color, warm the tint in your hands first for even distribution and apply as you would a bronzer.
Since hitting the red carpet in support of ‘Star Trek: Into Darkness’ Zoe Saldana has constantly painted her lips in bold, bright hues of red. In a behind-the-scenes video she was recently caught saying, “An item I cannot live without and that I’m always with is a red lipstick. I think every woman should find her right shade of red — An ideal red. Red is a very alive colour, it’s fire and it’s filled with passion, it helps you. It helps your spirit, it’s very present.”

Spotted on Zoe on May 14 (pictured far left) was Laura Mercier’s Crème Smooth Lip Colour in Hollywood. The shade is certainly bold and bright and Laura Mercier’s site describes it as just simply “red” — I guess no other descriptor is needed. Then, on May 20 she stepped out in Cannes for the premiere of ‘Blood Ties’ (pictured far right) in what appears to be that same shade of Hollywood red. But during a photocall for the same movie, on the same day in Cannes, (pictured center) she seems to have opted for a more pink hue — possibly Laura Mercier’s Crème Smooth Lip Colour in Palm Beach. No matter the color, it’s clear that Zoe truly does prefer bold lipsticks.

The time has come to free your legs from the shackles of tights and pants and debut them in your favorite skirt, shorts, or dress. But before that happens, there is that small matter of your body not having seen the light of day for months upon months at this point. You won’t need to hesitate very long on whether the world is ready for you to show a little skin once you spend about a week or two of regular application of one of these 10 sunless tanners. Working on the top layer of your epidermis by converting dead skin cells into a darker skin tone with DHA (a colorless sugar), sunless tanner is the safest way to get your glow going this summer.
I am always slightly envious of my friends who shell out money to get cool nail art done on their manicures. I do my own manicures and I’m not THAT good. So I am a happy nail enthusiast when a company makes nail design (even in the most simplistic styles) easier for me — China Glaze did just that with their Tranzitions polishes. These cool polishes appear to be a regular polish in one pretty shade, but when you swipe a top coat over them they change to a totally different color. Imagine the possibilities. Like, two days into your manicure you can completely change the color without repainting them entirely. Or, you can do fun things like “tranzition” just the tips, add stripes, or paint polka dots. I think they’re pretty much brilliant!

You can buy China Glaze Tranzitions for $4.99 at

With a very successful award season under her belt, it seems to been Jennifer Lawrence’s hair that has been taking center stage lately. After cutting her long hair to a shoulder-length bob (the J. Lob if you will) about a month ago, the new look has given the actress a chance to show that fun “trip while getting an Oscar” side that we all seem to love about her.

This weekend took J. Lob to the French Riviera both literally and figuratively with her tousled beachy waves at the premiere of “Jimmy P: Psychotherapy of a Plains Indian” at Cannes Film Festival. J. Law’s bright lip color and bronzed cheeks finished off this perfectly polished beach look that we’re totally stealing for upcoming summer parties.
