With the Met Gala’s Punk: Chaos to Couture theme this year, beauty products that pull in that rock star element have been catching my eye. There is something about the cool, “I’m not trying too hard, but actually yes this look took hours to create” element of rocker chic beauty that draws me in. Bringing the chance to channel your inner punk to the masses, Theo Kogan is a rocker, model, makeup artist, mom and the founder of cosmetics brand Armour Beauty. As a singer for bands, Theo wanted to create a lip gloss that would stay on during her performances. What she created is an intensely moisturizing, highly pigmented gloss that is as nourishing for the lips as it is fashion-forward rocker chic.

At first swipe, Armour Beauty’s lip gloss goes on smooth, produces bright color, and stays on much longer than your average gloss. The line of 20 glosses are named after songs, bands, and pop icons. The glosses come in two different collections: shimmer and opaque. Armour Beauty glosses range from on trend colors like Barracuda, a classic blue-red, to punk rock Femme Fatale, an opaque black gloss.

Not only do the glosses come packed with natural ingredients like avocado, mango, olive and shea butters, grape seed oil, and Vitamin E, they are also paraben- and cruelty-free. Finally a lip gloss that rocks as much as you do.

Of course we knew the stars of the Great Gatsby would bring their A-List beauty game to the highly anticipated premiere of the film at Lincoln Center in New York City on May 1. But what we didn’t expect was that Gatsby co-star Isla Fisher would steal the spotlight with her deep hot pink lip, retro black cat eyeliner, and super glam deep side part and waves. Ok! Magazine spilled the full details on the retro look straight from Fisher’s makeup artist Katye Denno. With the exception of one product, the look was done completely with organic and natural makeup brands. Denno’s inspiration for the look was to make Isla look like an “old-time, glamorous Hollywood movie star.” Mission definitely accomplished.

Jamie Greenberg, mark’s Celebrity Makeup Artist, wanted ‘Mad Men’ star Jessica Pare’s look to be “glamorous, neat and conservative. We decided to go for a clean girly look: all pinks, and a tight line on the lid and lashes.” We got the full scoop from Jamie herself on just how to recreate Jessica’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner look.

Eyes: “I started by applying mark Please Hold Eye Primer to create a strong base. Next, I swiped the light pink shade from mark On the Dot Pastel Eye Color Compact onto Jessica’s lids. I framed the eyes using mark Get in Line Hook Up Liquid Waterproof Liner in Painted Black and finished the look by applying mark Lash All You Want High-Volume Mascara in Black on Jessica’s top and bottom lashes.”

Face & Cheeks: “I started by applying mark Primed for Perfection Face Primer to create a strong base. Next, I applied mark Got the Goods Multi-Benefit Foundation Lotion SPF 15 in Very Light 2 to moisturize and even the skin. I blended mark Just Pinched Instant Blush Tint in Cheeky into Jessica’s cheekbones, followed by mark That’s Brilliant Face & Eye Luminizer for a natural flush and gorgeous highlight. I set the look by applying mark Matte-Nificent Oil-Absorbing Powder on Jessica’s T-zone.”

Lips: “I applied mark Lipclick Full Color Lipstick in Baby Luv to complete the sweet, girly look.”

I spent a lot of my youth questioning the need for primer. Was this all some big ploy to get me to spend more money? What do they even really do? What I’ve since discovered is that while a primer may not need to become a part of your daily beauty routine, the times you need a good primer in your life tend to be those moments where you need to look like the best version of yourself. Preferably all day and night long.

Primer should be used when your makeup needs extra staying power, or a little extra oomph. Have a photo shoot or an event where you know you’ll be striking a pose in numerous pictures? Prime time. An added benefit to the staying power of primer is the decreased appearance of fine lines on your face, creating a more flawless complexion. Primers are also a go-to in warmer months when sweat seems to be fighting to slide the makeup off of your face. Here are my picks for four primers that are able to fight the good fight. And win.

Korres Face Primer: A silicone-free, anti-oxidant and Vitamin-E rich option.
Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer: Mineral-based, water-resistant primer that aims to create a “smooth canvas”.
Too Faced Primed and Poreless: Retinol, Vitamin A & C, and mulberry extract make it a uniquely potent primer.
Benefit Cosmetics Stay Don’t Stray: Lightly tinted eye primer for use under concealer or eyeshadow.
