Fragrance is such a personal thing. When I received a sample of Folle de Joie, the clothing lines first foray into the fragrance realm, I wasn’t expecting much. But shortly after trying out the scent, my senses were intrigued. This was not your average too sweet, floral scent. The fragrance was inspired by Southern California beaches and Parisian charm, the overarching themes for Joie’s clothing line streamlined into the spritz of a fragrance. Opening with scents of Italian mandarin, South American petitgrain, and hints of cognac, the fragrance gives way to middle notes of orange blossom, jasmine, white lilly, and Damascus rose. Musk, amber, and sandalwood make up the final notes, creating an irresistible fragrance that will lead you to uncontrollable self-sniffing.

If you’ve already purchased the perfect Mother’s Day gift for this Sunday, bravo! For the rest of the us who haven’t had the chance to shop for mom and are planning a stroll through a local department store this weekend, here are three classic fragrances you can’t go wrong with for mom.

Isaac Mizrahi’s Fabulous: The fashion designer created his Fabulous fragrance with his own mother in mind. His mother only had a few, classic perfumes and he captured the essence of his mother’s timeless scents in the fragrance, down to the retro pink atomizer. What it smells like: a blend of citrus, peony, and musk.

Coco Mademoiselle Parfum Chanel: With the rich history behind Chanel’s fragrances, you really can’t go wrong with Chanel anything as a gift. The bottle is designed in a vintage style that is meant to be shown off on a dresser or vanity. What it smells like: Sicilian oranges, bergamot, rose, patchouli and grapefruit.

Prada Infusion d’Iris Eau de Parfum: A subtle but sophisticated scent, Prada’s d’Iris was inspired by gardens in Tuscany. If pink isn’t your mother’s thing, go (light) green with this fragrance. What it smells like: Iris, neroli, violet and Virginia cedar.
