Sunscreen should be a mandatory part of your everyday beauty routine, and for many of us it is. Yet when we think about protecting our faces and skin from the harmful effects of the sun we often forget our precious puckers. Your mouth needs sunscreen, too and Sun Bum has the perfect product for protecting your lips from the harmful effects of the sun. Sun Bum Lip Balm SPF 30 comes in five different yummy formulas, including my personal fave Mango and tropically delightful Coconut — and layers perfectly under lip gloss or lipstick.

You can buy Sun Bum Lip Balm SPF 30 for $3.99 at dermstore.com.

I am pretty partial to Yes To’s beauty product line, I’ve been a regular user of various Yes to Blueberries and Yes to Cucumbers products for years. But I was really excited when I saw the Yes to Grapefruit Even Skin Tone Moisturizer with SPF 15 at my local target. I’m still hooked on my mark See Things Clearly Brightening Moisturizer, however it doesn’t have SPF in it, so I needed something with a protection factor for the spring and summer months. Yes to Grapefruit’s lineup of products claims to “correct and repair uneven skin tone for a brighter, more glowing complexion,” and with my fairly limited test period I have to say my skin looks great and feels adequately protected when I’m out and about in the sun. As a heads up, I checked out the Yes to Grapefruit facial scrub, with pleasant results, as well — Needless to say I am definitely saying “yes” to grapefruit!

Clinical and research dermatologist Dr. Jeannette Graf shared her summer skin care tips with us for keeping skin safe this summer, including what number SPF is best, how often you should really be applying that sunscreen and other ways you can get the most out of your SPF products this season.

Tip #1: SPF 50+

In the summertime months, Dr. Graf recommends that you wear at least a minimum of SPF 50 or more. To the discussion over whether sunscreen over SPF 30 is any more effective than SPF 50, Dr. Graf says: “Yes!” But even at a higher level it still needs to be applied much more often than you think. Leading us to Tip #2.

Tip #2: Re-apply every 40 minutes

Despite what you may have been previously taught, for maximum skin coverage in the summer months re-application should be occurring every 40 minutes. Regular re-application is even more important if you have been sweating or in the water. Dr. Graf also says that sunscreen should be the last item applied to your face, on top of your makeup.

Tip # 3: A shot glass of sunscreen

One of the biggest sunscreen mistakes commonly made is not applying the right amount of sunscreen in the first place. Dr. Graf says that a shot glass worth of sunscreen is the proper amount to spread around your body.

Tip #4: Lotions, Sprays, Powders - which is best?

Sunscreen has come a long way and is now available in many forms. Deciding which one is best for you has more to do with your lifestyle. Sprays can be excellent for those on the go, especially for families, but ensuring you are using the proper amount of sunscreen is crucial to sprays offering maximum protection. Dr. Graf encourages her clients to steer clear of powders as the only type of sun protection. Two product recommendations from Dr. Graf: Glytone Continuous Spray SPF 50 for the body and Avene High Protection Tinted Compact for the face.

Truth be told, I haven’t been using foundation since I fell for BB cream. But if I hadn’t already switched from foundation, I would totally be ditching it for Almay’s Smart Shade CC Cream Complexion Corrector. Their CC cream provides light to medium coverage, a bit more than other CC creams on the market which is good news for those with uneven skin tone and light redness. Formulated to correct and even skin texture over time, Almay reports that 70% of users in a clinical trial had visible improvements in the clarity and texture in their skin after two weeks of use. A product that works even when you’re not wearing it? I’m in.

What I like most about Almay’s latest product is the smooth and luminous finish it leaves coupled with the fact that it contains broad spectrum SPF 35, making it a perfect summer makeup base. Right now there are only three shades including Light, Light/Medium, and Medium, but the product does include technology that aids in matching the shade to your skin tone. Almay is now officially invited on all upcoming vacations.

Hopefully at this point we have all learned the importance of sunscreen for our faces, our bodies, and don’t forget the tops of the ears (I always seem to, unfortunately). But what about the delicate skin under and around the eyes? Since most SPF comes with a warning to “avoid eye area”, and we’ve all at some point felt the sting of not heeding to these instructions, our eyes can be left vulnerable to sun damage.

Sun spots, redness, and horror of all horrors, wrinkles are all caused by leaving the eye area unprotected. For the fight against crow’s feet, here are five eye creams with SPF (amongst other anti-aging and hydrating properties), that will protect you where you need it most.
